Sustainability with Heart: How Kindness Drives Change

Sustainability is often framed in technical terms: GHG emissions, circular economy models, ESG frameworks. But at its core, sustainability is about relationships: between people, businesses, and the planet. One of the most underrated forces in driving change is kindness. It is a foundational value for how we collaborate, innovate and create a positive impact.

Kindness isn’t just a soft skill; it’s a strategic approach. Empathy, generosity, and trust-building are just as critical as data and policy when it comes to creating a more sustainable world. Whether in business, leadership, or activism, kindness shapes how we inspire change, foster inclusion, and build movements.

In the sustainability movement, kindness is about keeping the planet and the people at the core.

Sustainability starts with a shift in mindset: from viewing the planet as an endless resource to actively nurturing it. Farmers adopting regenerative agriculture techniques rebuild soil health while ensuring long-term food security. Urban planners prioritising green spaces improve biodiversity and public health. Even individuals choosing to consume responsibly — buying less, reusing more — help curb waste. When we treat the planet with care, we create systems that sustain both nature and society in the long term.

Sustainability is not just about environmental responsibility; it’s also about fairness. Fair wages in supply chains ensure workers are treated with dignity. Upholding indigenous rights protects both cultural heritage and ecological wisdom. Climate policies designed with vulnerable communities in mind prevent deepening inequalities caused by environmental shifts. Sustainable progress means making decisions that put nature, not just profits, at the center, ensuring equity and well-being for all.

At Proxima, we see kindness as a core part of how we work. We meet businesses where they are, and work alongside them with empathy rather than judgment, which builds trust. Sustainability transitions are complex, and a supportive partner makes all the difference. We also prioritise collaboration over competition: openly sharing insights and working with industry peers to accelerate progress. The recent Right to Repair bill is a great example of that. Within our team, kindness drives how we collaborate, communicate, and make decisions.

Kindness isn’t just good for the world, it’s also good for us. Research in positive psychology highlights the hedonic treadmill—the idea that people constantly chase new achievements or material success, only to return to the same baseline level of happiness. A bigger house, a higher salary, or a new gadget provides temporary satisfaction, but the effect quickly fades, leading us to seek the next big thing.

However, acts of kindness like helping others, contributing to a cause, or fostering meaningful connections, offer a different kind of happiness. Studies show that people who focus on kindness and purpose experience more sustained well-being than those who pursue self-satisfaction alone. In sustainability, this means shifting from individual gain to collective good. Leaders and businesses that integrate kindness into their operations not only build stronger relationships but also create ripple effects of positive impact across supply chains, communities, and industries.

Call to action: Practicing kindness in Sustainability

Sustainability professionals and leaders have the opportunity to embed kindness in their work:

  • Listen more than you speak – Understanding diverse perspectives leads to more inclusive, effective solutions.

  • Support just transitions – Advocate for policies and strategies that protect workers and vulnerable communities during economic and environmental shifts.

  • Share knowledge – The more we build capability in this space, the faster we create change.

  • Celebrate progress, not just perfection – Sustainability is a journey, and acknowledging genuine efforts keeps people motivated.

Kindness strengthens trust, encourages collaboration, and creates the right conditions for systemic change. If we want a future that is not only sustainable but also just and thriving, kindness must be at its foundation.
